WINTER SOLSTICE

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

The shortest day the longest night
Benighted souls seeking the light
The sun in deepest declination
Darkness shrouds the northern nations

The solstice marks a time of change
From the light we’ve been estranged
For longer days our hearts do yearn
Sunlight surely must return

For in due time by steady progress
The sun’s climb will this dark suppress
And soon its penetrating rays
Bring the lengthening of each day

As the solstice now we mark
Entombed in gloom and shadows dark
Let’s look to brightening days ahead
As light again becomes widespread

CHRISTMAS CAROL – FOR PARTY PEOPLE

Christmas Carol – for Party People

[This is a re-posting of a poem from Christmas last year]

[Sing this to the tune of ‘Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown’]

CHRISTMAS CAROL - FOR PARTY PEOPLE

We left God alone with his throne and his crown
For we had little time to spare
We were too busy spending our hard earned cash
Buying gifts and grooming our hair
For it’s party time and we must look good
As we’re all heading off to town

But then someone reminds us of that stable bare
With the Holy Child in the manger
And the ox and ass and wise men three
Then we thought of those living in danger
The sick and the poor and the refugee
And all those deserving our care

So that Baby of old and the twinkling star
Tells of God’s great love which came
Into the world to save souls in their need
By kindling that loving flame
So come dear Lord wipe out all our greed
With the light from that stable afar

God never says no when we celebrate
He is happy to rejoice with us all
So give thanks to God who loves each of us
He too will come to the ball
So come dear Lord, we won’t make a fuss
As again you with us incarnate

A Little Light in Darkness

A Little Light in Darkness

P1020762

A little breath of summer

To lighten these dark days

A glimmer of sunshine

To fall upon our way

A splash of brilliant colour

To lift our depressed mood

A light that brings new hope and joy

Thus making all life good

When?

When?

P1010672

When in the midst of these dark winter days

When we find very little that we might praise

When spirits are low and we feel ‘S-A-D’

When the political landscape seems really bad

When rumours of warfare seem to abound

When news of disasters do us astound

When days have grown short and our temper to match

When some nasty ‘flu virus is easy to catch

When Christmas is due but not quite here yet

When finding good gifts is making us fret

When meeting our bills is sure to be tight

When threats of burst pipes may give us a fright

When we’re struggling in shops and even on-line

When sorting it out takes so much time

When what we need is to simply pull back

When we should let all our tension go slack

When is not some vague time ahead

When we can stop ourselves seeing red

When must be NOW, and we know that is true

Let’s NOW take a break – yes that’s me and that’s you!

Saving the Planet

SAVING THE PLANET [comment on current international discussions – Dec 2015]

DSCF4047

It seems to me among the threats from which there’s no relief

is warming of the global kind which parches earth and leaf

A menace strong as solid granite

which promises a deadly blow to life throughout the planet

At first we simply turned away, pretending all was well,

but gradually increased the noise from nature’s warning bell

Awareness of this mounting vice

shown clearly in the rising tides and gently melting ice

Why worry at impending doom

this threat, if real, unlikely to be soon

Technology must have some appliance

Let’s get on and check the science

All warnings dire of petrol fumes or dangerous emissions

are set aside by one and all as ignorant suspicions

We claim clean engines now, which never have been better

all problems solved forevermore by catalytic converter

Health experts seem overwrought on dangers of pollution

but others think it can’t be hard to find a good solution

Technocrats are sure to help and even us to save

by harnessing the power of wind, if need be, the waves

We, in the West, too fond of having plenty

Club members of the great G20,

The good and great within its ranks

the chiefs of mighty Central Banks

With power like that we can ensure

the pleadings of the needy poor

do not upset our life of ease

demanding we be kind to trees!

Or temper use of fossil fuels

Or other kinds of nature’s jewels

Resources of those poorer lands

grabbed by our great colonial hands

After all, this is our life

achieved through years of work and strife

At all costs we must keep our gain

To do other, means much pain

But all the nations rich or poor

must work together, seek a cure

And rich may need to learn to suffer

their ease may prove it all the tougher

And when it comes to issues global

problems become highly mobile

No nation stands completely safe

from tempest’s winds or ocean’s waves

The rising tide and searing sun

challenge life for everyone

Disease and famine knock each door

No-one immune – the rich or poor

Perhaps there is a glint of hope,

the need to find a way to cope

Each year is dawning somewhat clearer

as melt-down time seems ever nearer

The leaders seem at last to grasp

before our breath becomes a gasp

That time is short if we’re to save

our children from an early grave

On carbon footprints let’s step light

Gas guzzlers out – get on your bike!

On grow your own, why not be keen?

Your favourite colour should be green

 Recycle anything you can

Cut out all waste must be our plan

Turn off the power when not in use

Recycle glass if you must booze!

And so in many little ways

Collective effort stems future blaze

Which global warming has in store

A fate we simply can’t ignore

If citizens will do their bit

Our leaders then might well see fit

To echo modest aspirations

Giving a lead to all our nations

This cannot be the final word

To say that would be quite absurd

The God who made this world at first

remains the One in whom we trust.

Water, Water, Everywhere!

Water, Water, Everywhere

P1150267

One thing that’s not in short supply

for lack of which we need not cry

Is that liquid we can’t do without

But right now we may need bail out

Our roads are swamped by mini lakes

Which force drivers to test their brakes

And heaven help those on the pave

When they are hit by tidal wave!

If this wet weather must persist

To seek shelter we can’t resist

Let’s like Noah, build an ark

And when it dries we’ll disembark

We pray for antediluvian days

Basking in the sun’s bright rays

But meantime just endure the flood

And try not to sink into the mud!

The Excesses of Christmas – Not All Bad!!

The Excesses of Christmas – Not All Bad!!

[Written just before Black Friday 2015]

DSCF3403

The lips of pious Christians at this Advent time of year
Are prone to complain that all sacredness is lost
Christmas without Christ is what they seem to fear
The Baby from that manger has readily been tossed

Mind you there still remains some attachment sentimental
Christmas carols, ‘holy’ cards, and the school nativity
And Christingle shows a glimmer of light transcendental
But it’s the secular not the sacred that centres much activity

Of course for some this loss of its religious heart
Robs Christmas of all its meaning, even all its worth
The love radiating from the stable no longer does impart
And few can accept that mysterious virgin birth

However attempts to turn the clock back are really rather futile
And after all the vast majority of the modern populace
Do not have any such inhibitions, no such petty scruples
They are pleased to welcome ‘Christmastide’ and duly it embrace

So our fellow citizens en masse will not hesitate to revel
Melt down their plastic in a mighty hedonistic spree
Dance happily with the world, the flesh and the devil
And unashamedly express their joy and untold glee

But the question is – is excess all that bad?
Is there not a time when we all should celebrate
And despite these days of darkness a need to still feel glad
And from our burdened shoulders shed that heavy weight

Let the ancient power of the Story still speak to hearts and minds
Let’s not deny the right of those who uphold sacred tradition
But the festival of winter belongs to all humankind
And a little excess in living still a welcome intermission

Love’s Labour Gained

P1040346

They don’t grow on trees!

The gardener’s indignant pronouncement

Well of course they do! – or at least on bushes

But I suppose you could say it’s a co-operative venture

We need the collective effort

Of plant and tree, of soil and sun

And gentle rain or watering can

And the loving care of those who tend the crop

Thus the gain from all this labour

Creation, but not just by accident!

At last a harvest to delight the eye

And to excite the palate

Spring Forward, Fall Back

Spring Forward, Fall Back

Darkening days remind us that we have reached the day

When gentle Autumn sunshine to winter grey gives sway

In spring the clocks leaped forward, now they must fall back

Let’s hope some time will pass yet before the frosts attack

Of course we should be pleased we gain another hour

A little time is granted from Old Man Time’s own dower

But whether we will notice these extra minutes given

And if we simply sleep instead surely we’re forgiven

So on Sunday morn when that precious hour is granted

Fall back upon your pillow, don’t be disenchanted

Let gentle dreams and happy thoughts fill your sleepy head

And enjoy that extra hour in your warm and cosy bed!

Early Winter Frost

Early Winter Frost

The clocks put back the week before
Already cars enwrapped in hoar
Window scrapers called to service
For the future we feel nervous

Does this herald the arrival
Of another challenge to survival?
Perhaps this fear precipitate
Too soon to settle winter’s fate

And with the cold comes brilliant sun
Both young and old partake in fun
The parks are full like a cried fair
Stale lungs are filled with frosty air

Autumn transformed to winter’s chill
Thus earth its treasures to distil
The trees bereft of fruit or leaf
Present a skeletal motif

And bustling crowds in shops and street
Anxiously at times compete
To finish all they have to do
Fore twilight heralds its curfew

But darkening days need not make fear
Life still provides much that can cheer
As we return to hearth and home
Content for now, no longer roam

Thus life adjusts to fit the season
Each changing month provides the reason
As daylight hours begin to shrink
Of warmth and home is what we think

But in due time as days roll on
We gradually discern that dawn
Creeps ever earlier though the pane
Renews our spirits once again

Autumn into Winter

Autumn into Winter

P1040208

Autumnal winds and darkening skies have already taken toll

The branches of once sheltering bowers stripped naked to the soul

No longer sunlight shafting through the leaves, trees stark against the sky

Fading memories of summer warmth, bring to our hearts a sigh

But all’s not lost, the Autumn tints can yet delight the eye

And oft far above our heads a lofty azure sky

Beneath our feet a multi-textured carpet cushions where we walk

And as twilight comes it’s home and hearth the object of our thought

But this season of transition is not all foreboding, filled with gloom

Of course the flowers of summer no longer radiate their bloom

But while horizons drop and outdoor prospects shrink

A closer focus affords more time to pause, a chance to think

So as we reflect on nature’s yearly pattern, and every changing phase

Our inner eye may contemplate the passage of our days

Let’s give to our Creator thanks for all that’s passed, yet what may remain

And lay again our trust in God who all our life sustains

Lupins

Lupins

P1020161

Stretching upwards to the light

Radiant colours ever bright

Their poker flowers of tapered shape

Our attention can’t escape

Lupinus is its proper name

This legume should enjoy much fame

Not only employed for decoration

Useful food for many a nation

Its seeds are sometimes used in cooking

If protein and fibre we are seeking

Low in starch and gluten free

Promoting health you must agree

Lupins used in agriculture

And even more in horticulture

Cattle by this plant are fed

Its blossoms brighten garden beds

So don’t o’erlook the humble flower

Whose colours beautify the hour

Give it a place in your display

It’s sure to illume every day
