While the Tempest Rages

While the Tempest Rages

DSCN1962

Travellers gaze upwards with anxious glances

While branches come crashing to the ground

Double glazed windows assaulted by the gales

A test of strength for the garden shed and glasshouse

Birds circling as in a whirlpool below a lowering sky

Pedestrians angled acutely forward against the blast

Umbrellas outside-in, their twisted spokes fractured

Mothers grip their toddlers ever tighter

Children fail to circumnavigate the puddles

The lollipop man battles with his wayward sign

Motorists give wide berth to high-sided lorries

The A signs outside shops cartwheel across the pavement

Nervous passengers suspended in the terminal

Perhaps happy not yet to be whirling aloft

Ships at sea scurry for safe havens

Novice cruise passengers fail to find sea legs

Office workers plea for an early release

Lest they be marooned twixt work and home

College students simply lie abed – why bother?

Weather forecasters issue ominous warnings

More strident as they move from the Yellow

Through the Amber to the Red – Take Action!

But what action can we take?

As the Americans say

Let’s hunker down!

Calm is sure to return

Sadly, not yet!

Keeping Up Appearances

Keeping Up Appearances

P1110244

Lots of energy exerted to keep that mask in place

Fearful that the world might glimpse no smile upon our face

Determined at all costs to keep up the appearance

Hold on to that rictus grin with dogged perseverance

Would it not be refreshing if just once in a while

We faced the world without that radiant inane smile?

Surely in our inner souls we often want to scream

So why no honest glower instead of radiant beam?

Whatever happens we must look always on the bright side

The optimistic outlook must ever be our guide

Come what may our behaviour quite heroic

Perhaps just now and then why not be a po-faced stoic!

Keeping up appearances no doubt has its own merit

But if our stance is false it does us little credit

And if the expression that we offer is simply a façade

The world will soon realise our dazzling smile’s a fraud!

Keep Taking the Tablets!

Keep Taking the Tablets!

P1050496

The guidelines in the chemist’s pamphlet

Says you should ‘keep taking all the tablets’

The doctor in her diatribe

Said that’s what for you I have prescribed

So we must listen to what they say

And take the dose for each new day

And if we do, we are assured

That very soon we will be cured

Not only when we find we’re ill

We need to swallow a bitter pill

Life’s worldly trials sometimes enforce

A different kind of daily dose

But we must learn to persevere

With duties that may be quite austere

And try to shoulder all our cares

With smiles rather than with tears

And if with joy each day we face

Our problems we will soon replace

With blessings and not bitter pills

Thus coping with all our life’s ills

When the Internet Crashed

When the Internet Crashed

P1050498

Booted up in the usual way

Friendly icons reappear

Just like any other day

Through the menus we can steer

Keeping to the old routine

Nothing there seems out of place

All laid out neatly on the screen

Every task made commonplace

Ready now to check the mail

No doubt the inbox will be stacked

With problems that will our minds assail

And junk mail too, that must distract

So let’s waste no time just hit that symbol

Or whatever key will release the flow

Scan down that list, it is so simple

Then it hits us, that awful blow!

Don’t tell us that we can’t connect!

Surely we have paid the bill

That’s not something we neglect

Our voice rises rather shrill

Further checks we implement

It’s not just email that has crashed

Looks like a real predicament

All connections somehow trashed

Not one web site can we open

All our favourites unresponsive

Surely all this can’t be broken

Somehow they’ve been knocked unconscious

But let us pause for just a while

Could this be a blessing in disguise

Must this hiatus cramp our style?

To simply panic is unwise

This moratorium we can enjoy

In the shut-down let’s relax

Other tasks our minds employ

Ignore ‘Big Data’s’ mega facts

Read a book or take a walk

Why not give the car a clean?

Remember how you used to talk

Freed from those all-commanding screens

Just think back, not long ago

Before computers made us slaves

Perhaps the pace was rather slow

Not leading to an early grave!

So once you’ve taken some time out

And let your nerves calm down a bit

You check once more the screen blackout

And no doubt it will then be fit

A few more clicks and we will bet

Those vital beeps will bring us cheer

Herald the returning internet

Dispelling all our angst and fear

And perhaps with hindsight we will see

A temporary pause can be corrective

With some thought you might agree

Let’s keep computers in perspective

SLEEP

SLEEP

Some might say it is the reward to the righteous

I wonder if sinners are always wakeful?

We sometimes long to find escape in sleep

And yet we may fear in sleep we lose our vigilance

Sleep apparently is a naturally recurring state

It certainly would seem odd if we never slept

Sleep is the opposite of wakefulness

It brings us a blessed relief from reacting to stimuli

Thinking about sleep can bring great concern

Insomnia is viewed as a serious issue

Although hypersomnia might be even more alarming

Especially shown in excessive day-time sleep

But all of this is a bit clinical, too narrow a view

The word sleep has other connotations

Not least as when it is used as a euphemism

For random intimate relations – as in sleeping around

And what about the modern trend of kids

Who regularly bed down at their friends’ homes?

In an endless round of sleep-overs

Probably quite harmless – I believe!

Then there is the advice we are given

To sleep on it often ignored by the impetuous

Perhaps we might be able to resolve issues

By a nocturnal perambulation – a sleepwalk

We also will recall that apart from

The slightly naughty thought raised by

the term, sleeping partner is a perfectly

legal type of business organisation

And to complete this little tour round

Some of the uses of the word sleep

I must now put my computer into

Sleep mode – it deserves some relief!

Big Yawn!

When?

When?

P1010672

When in the midst of these dark winter days

When we find very little that we might praise

When spirits are low and we feel ‘S-A-D’

When the political landscape seems really bad

When rumours of warfare seem to abound

When news of disasters do us astound

When days have grown short and our temper to match

When some nasty ‘flu virus is easy to catch

When Christmas is due but not quite here yet

When finding good gifts is making us fret

When meeting our bills is sure to be tight

When threats of burst pipes may give us a fright

When we’re struggling in shops and even on-line

When sorting it out takes so much time

When what we need is to simply pull back

When we should let all our tension go slack

When is not some vague time ahead

When we can stop ourselves seeing red

When must be NOW, and we know that is true

Let’s NOW take a break – yes that’s me and that’s you!

Words

Words

[Our use of words is part of our humanity]

P1040793

Words in all their glory

Words to tell a story

Words filled with great emotion

Words to convey a notion

Words to calm the mind

Words freeing those confined

Words to congratulate

Words that warmly celebrate

Words that show contempt

Words may great things attempt

Words used to apologise

Words to show we can be wise

Words that help educate

Words that do berate

Words that make us fret

Words we much regret

Words we should have said

Words whispered while in bed

Words not used by the shy

Words that make us sigh

Words of anger said in haste

Words that reputation did debase

Words that we anticipate

Words that came too late

Words that rebuild relations

Words to unite the nation

Words sent as from above

Words expressing our true love

Let’s not be LOST FOR WORDS!

Water, Water, Everywhere!

Water, Water, Everywhere

P1150267

One thing that’s not in short supply

for lack of which we need not cry

Is that liquid we can’t do without

But right now we may need bail out

Our roads are swamped by mini lakes

Which force drivers to test their brakes

And heaven help those on the pave

When they are hit by tidal wave!

If this wet weather must persist

To seek shelter we can’t resist

Let’s like Noah, build an ark

And when it dries we’ll disembark

We pray for antediluvian days

Basking in the sun’s bright rays

But meantime just endure the flood

And try not to sink into the mud!

Desperate Dan

Desperate Dan

P1040379

On a recent visit to bonny Dundee

Our hearts were filled again with glee

As we caught sight of Desperate Dan

The Dandy’s favourite comical man

On the high street he holds a place of honour

Like a war hero or an ancient martyr

But his deeds were not in the arena of war

But in the comic cartoons no-one could ignore

His diet would not be commended today

Cow pies are certainly now quite passe

And that stubbly chin these days might offend

Not what the barbers would now recommend

But Dan didn’t worry what others would think

Just like pals Dennis and Minnie the Minx

His main role in life was to bring us a smile

And let us forget all our woes for a while

So thanks to the town of Dundee and its press

Whose comic characters such humour express

Jam, Jute and Journalism were this city’s great trades

And thus Dan’s place of honour we all serenade

Any Difference?

Any Difference?

When the ‘good and the great’ depart from the scene
Will people remember who these leaders have been?
Do we fear for the future, how will we survive?
With these notable persons no longer alive

Their deeds hit the headlines, their words we recall
Their actions important no matter how small
The press paid them homage and their face was well-known
All that they did seemed to bring them renown

Apparently this is the way of the world
‘Celebrities’ matter, so they must be heard
Their pictures all over the newspaper pages
Note extravagant spending from excessive wages

But I ask this question, did it really matter?
All their crazy antics and quite inane chatter
What difference to us did their lives really make
What benefit came to us all in their wake?

So here is a thought for each and for all
Let us make a difference, be we oh so small
By our love for each other eschewing all fame
However humble our deeds, or obscure be our name

Teflon Or Velcro

Teflon Or Velcro

Human personalities vary to a great degree

To describe them all is really beyond me

But a shrewd observer has summed it in one phrase

Are we Teflon or Velcro in the manner that we faze?

If life’s problems and trials simply bounce off our back

If everyday irritations don’t turn our mood to black

Then we’re more like Teflon that can easily repel

And cast aside the issues that would our peace dispel

On the other hand some of us simply can’t let things go

More like Velcro sticking to each new found woe

Every change and chance in life’s daily grind

Ensnares us with chains that forever bind

But perhaps these labels are really far too neat

The Velcro types do not always taste defeat

Teflon champions cannot always win the day

‘Cause life isn’t black or white, it’s often rather grey

So what can we learn from these categorisations

What principle of action, what useful application?

Teflon and Velcro, both useful innovations

But of personality, not the complete summation

We each are born with characteristics quite unique

Some bold and confident, others shy and rather meek

So we must work with what we’ve got and try to do our best

And trade-mark role models should not be the only test

So thank you Teflon, you’ve shown us to resist

Testing times and challenges that seem still to persist

And Velcro, you’ve warned us not to let all things stick

And perhaps to grow a hide that’s just a little thick

But in the end, no matter what may come

Full of excitement or even quite hum drum

Help us in all things to steer the middle course

Whether Teflon our Velcro remains the guiding force

Enjoy the Web but Don’t Get Tangled

search-1

That science has been for us a boon I think you will agree

From daily grind and drudgery it sets our spirits free

We have to thank the scientists for research knows no bounds

Discovering and inventing things heretofore not found

But science alone might have remained arid ideology

Without its application in practical technology

So down the years these boffins have changed the way we live

A fact for which our grateful thanks we readily should give

The early work of scientists and ingenious engineers

Wrought huge machines with pistons and complicated gears

They lifted things, pushed them along and kept the mines quite dry

Such powerful machines, thus the nation changed thereby

We saw before our eyes a growing Revolution

For every challenge industry would yield a ready-made solution

What e’r our need, or problems quite refractory

The answer surely could be found within our local factory

As years went by the fruits of science touched every modern nation

Technology made to respond what e’r the situation

Chemical, mechanical, electrical, even jet propulsion

Willingly adopted without the least compulsion

Thus o’er the years the pace of change was evident to all

Large cities, congestion, increasing urban sprawl

But science had also generated considerable wealth

These funds provided for our needs and to promote our health

And in due course the sciences of the past did gradually mature

No longer simply a way in which to master crude nature

Research then applied to the field of communication

To draw us near and thus avoid any alienation

For decades the telegraph, the radio and the phone

Could keep each one of us in touch with those at home

And in due time computers and then the Internet

An even slicker system in time it did beget

Although not many this concept did foresee

Thank goodness for the genius of Tim Berners-Lee

His World Wide Web around the globe would span

Perhaps the greatest gift of all to everyman

Thus by means of this masterly innovation

Links could be forged with each and every nation

And in a instant data drawn from every distant land

Is ours by clicking it when linked into broadband

Thus all we needed to ensure that we possess the facts

Of any sphere of knowledge, or any person’s acts

A simple lesson showing how the web to navigate

And thus the store of knowledge we thus can actuate

In this way access to knowledge hoarded by each profession

Became for every man their right, their very own possession

There is no doubt the opening of this mighty treasure

Expanded power through knowledge in ever greater measure

But perhaps a word of caution about this web worldwide

Too many facts, too quickly found, can lose us in its tide

And simply when we come to think of every answer thus on tap

An attitude can easily develop which then becomes a trap

Everything that is worthwhile requires effort on our part

We therefore need thus to apply both mind and even heart

The web is here to stay and in that we rejoice

But how we think and how we act is ever our own choice

Thanks to the pioneers of science for these useful innovations

For their research has brought to us great help, real benefaction

And when life is dull and sometimes lacks that necessary glitter

All pals can readily unite on Face Book and on Twitter!
