The Bank of Mum&Dad (BoMaD)

The Bank of Mum & Dad

shelter-bomd-final-logo

It would appear from press reports that if you find you’re short of cash
And trying to buy a house without the necessary stash
If you’re getting nowhere with the usual high street lenders
And chances of scaling the property ladder are getting ever slender

Then the best prospect for those who hold such aspirations
Is to maintain accord with your very close relations
Because it seems you will need to bring out that begging bowl
And ask your Mum and Dad if they will kindly you bankroll?

Costs of fleeing the nest seem to forever spiral
House price inflation having gone completely viral
So ‘baby boomer’ parents find that in this world gone mad
The desirable new brand is simply called BOMAD*

And offspring for sure are rarely being coy
As they latch on to this money-seeking ploy
As their elders have gained by rises o’er the years
And their bricks became a goldmine in common with their peers

So watch out all parents if you thought your wealth secure
You can’t ignore the pleadings of your kids who’re oh so poor
Cancel world cruises or a room in that care home
You’ll need to give your progeny more than chromosomes!

My Attempt to Save BHS!

My attempt to save BHS [British Home Stores]

7

Having heard the bad news about BHS
One of our favourite stores, I have to confess
It’s fate hangs in the balance as it waits to be saved
Although I fear it won’t escape completely unscathed

Founded in 1928 this well-known retailer has made its mark
And news of its predicament seems all very stark
We knew there were problems, but hoped they might pass
And that thoughts of closure it might simply bypass

But today its seems to stand on the brink
And without some help it surely will sink
So although I have no means to solve all its woes
I thought it might help if I bought a few clothes!

When I visited the store to my great delight
Its welcoming windows were still shining bright
And better still (although perhaps not for them)
There were discounts on offer wherever we went

Although we could not make any magnanimous gesture
We hope in a small way we might have brought pleasure
As I rifled the shelves for a really good deal
And found two nice shirts which I thought had appeal!

So although we clearly could not redeem the store’s fate
[I think that to do that it is now far too late]
But perhaps by our small deed we still hope and believe
That from disaster surely someone will BHS retrieve

The Economic Conundrum

The Economic Conundrum

Adam Smith author of The Wealth of Nations

Adam Smith author of
“The Wealth of Nations”

At one time called the Dismal Science yielding little joy
Economists for many years did their sharp minds employ
Their thoughts focused day by day on how to increase wealth
And thus enhance our lives by improving financial health

They spent many hours examining the ‘factors of production’
How each might promote growth thus avoiding all obstruction
There should be no obstacles in the way, no awkward inhibitions
The slogan and the rallying call was complete Free Competition

The use of Land, Labour and Capital comprised the magic potion
And Enterprise, the wizard, applied a stirring motion
And from the steaming vapours of this brew we all would gain
Thus economic growth became the Holy Grail

This all sounded plausible and few it would gainsay
But economic equations can often go astray
The problem seems to be that when humans are involved
The rules of other sciences, the economy just ignored

Some basic principles like demand, supply, and price
As a predictor of choice was quite a sound device
But on a global scale when estimating how people might behave
The errors that resulted were really rather grave

But despite the lack of any real precision
Economists have sought to influence decisions
Monetarists made money their very real fixation
While Fiscal gurus obsessed much on taxation

Then these experts ventured into many other spheres
Which no doubt offered to each and all a lucrative career
So interest rates, and foreign trade they found had much potential
And credit swaps and derivatives  somehow grew essential

Flotations and mergers and the Stock Exchange gyrations
No problem left unsolved what e’r the complications
Economists were waiting with a ready made solution
Right at the cutting edge of the knowledge revolution

So we celebrate the words of Adam Smith of old
How amidst the capitalists’ sweeping actions bold
Existed a force which Smith called an ‘invisible hand’
That self-regulating market force hidden in our land

So perhaps the conundrum of economic thought
From which all its various wondrous fruits were wrought
Is simply that its disciplines help to show the way
Nonetheless we alone decide how to live each day

STOP THE TREADMILL I WANT TO GET OFF!!

Stop the Treadmill I want to Get Off

hamster-on-treadmill

It has often been said, with a deal of regret

That life is a treadmill we must never forget

Great is the effort we expend every day

Hours of hard work and so little play

And yet we are told that’s how the world works

We must all do our share, no-one should shirk

On this collective effort the economy depends

Long working days and quite short weekends

Productivity must increase more every year

Falling short of the target is something to fear

More goods and services has become our new God

If a good standard of living we are to afford

This is all very well I hear you accede

But why must serving that treadmill become our new creed?

Surely our aim is not to live just to labour

But to enjoy all the pleasures a good life should savour

So let us remember to give the treadmill its place

But find enough time the ‘good life’ to embrace

And if this balance we then can achieve

Our lost contentment we might soon retrieve

Saving the Planet

SAVING THE PLANET [comment on current international discussions – Dec 2015]

DSCF4047

It seems to me among the threats from which there’s no relief

is warming of the global kind which parches earth and leaf

A menace strong as solid granite

which promises a deadly blow to life throughout the planet

At first we simply turned away, pretending all was well,

but gradually increased the noise from nature’s warning bell

Awareness of this mounting vice

shown clearly in the rising tides and gently melting ice

Why worry at impending doom

this threat, if real, unlikely to be soon

Technology must have some appliance

Let’s get on and check the science

All warnings dire of petrol fumes or dangerous emissions

are set aside by one and all as ignorant suspicions

We claim clean engines now, which never have been better

all problems solved forevermore by catalytic converter

Health experts seem overwrought on dangers of pollution

but others think it can’t be hard to find a good solution

Technocrats are sure to help and even us to save

by harnessing the power of wind, if need be, the waves

We, in the West, too fond of having plenty

Club members of the great G20,

The good and great within its ranks

the chiefs of mighty Central Banks

With power like that we can ensure

the pleadings of the needy poor

do not upset our life of ease

demanding we be kind to trees!

Or temper use of fossil fuels

Or other kinds of nature’s jewels

Resources of those poorer lands

grabbed by our great colonial hands

After all, this is our life

achieved through years of work and strife

At all costs we must keep our gain

To do other, means much pain

But all the nations rich or poor

must work together, seek a cure

And rich may need to learn to suffer

their ease may prove it all the tougher

And when it comes to issues global

problems become highly mobile

No nation stands completely safe

from tempest’s winds or ocean’s waves

The rising tide and searing sun

challenge life for everyone

Disease and famine knock each door

No-one immune – the rich or poor

Perhaps there is a glint of hope,

the need to find a way to cope

Each year is dawning somewhat clearer

as melt-down time seems ever nearer

The leaders seem at last to grasp

before our breath becomes a gasp

That time is short if we’re to save

our children from an early grave

On carbon footprints let’s step light

Gas guzzlers out – get on your bike!

On grow your own, why not be keen?

Your favourite colour should be green

 Recycle anything you can

Cut out all waste must be our plan

Turn off the power when not in use

Recycle glass if you must booze!

And so in many little ways

Collective effort stems future blaze

Which global warming has in store

A fate we simply can’t ignore

If citizens will do their bit

Our leaders then might well see fit

To echo modest aspirations

Giving a lead to all our nations

This cannot be the final word

To say that would be quite absurd

The God who made this world at first

remains the One in whom we trust.

The Builders

The Builders

P1020227

No challenge too great for the building trade
No problem will make these workers afraid
They dig down to make sure of a firm foundation
The earth that they move could re-shape the nation

Then they build up many rows of bricks upon brick
With a hod and a trowel they perform this neat trick
They leave spaces for windows and holes for the doors
And layer-by-layer they construct each new floor

Inside this stark shell they fit out each room
And soon we discern the shape of a home
If of their achievements we still require proof
Just take a glance at the shiny new roof

For their unstinting efforts, we these workers salute
Their dedication and skill is not in dispute
The future homeowner will derive so much pleasure
Thanks to those builders for their willing endeavor

The Vagaries Of The Stock Market

The Vagaries Of The Stock Market

j0216027

Markets are driven by fear and by greed

With scant regard to what workers might need

When markets rise the ‘bulls’ join the charge

When they fall it’s the ‘bears’ who quickly loom large

It’s ‘shareholder value’ that we must maintain

Keeping them happy on this gravy train

So when share prices dip it brings on a panic

And stock dealing activity can quickly go manic

While markets are buoyant the traders are pleased

Healthy profits allow the investors to squeeze

the maximum divvy from what they invest

That’s the scenario that they love the best

So their greed for ‘returns’ has duly been met

Investing their cash has been a wise bet

But when profits slump and shares take a dive

They suddenly fear that they may not survive!

Investment gurus warn us to assess all the risks

When making decisions avoid being too brisk

We are told that investments can go up or go down

Sometimes we smile, but quite often frown

So perhaps the wise thing that we ought to do

If we want our money to safely accrue

Is to avoid investing in ‘get rich quick’ schemes

And never indulge in fanciful dreams

So what choice do we have to avoid greed and fear?

And yet live a life that’s not too austere

To keep our savings balance in the black not the red

Let’s stash it all safely under the bed!

Volatility In The Stock Exchange

Volatility In The Stock Exchange

images

Once again I’m feeling bitter

The Stock Exchange has got the jitters

You invest your cash for long-term gain

And end up suffering much pain

We have been told it’s wise to save

Don’t splash the cash, don’t misbehave

But after years of careful living

There’s little cause for much thanksgiving

Year by year we did what’s best

Faithfully we would invest

In shares and bonds and ISA’s too

Wasting our cash we did eschew

Our interest money did compound

Thus inflation did confound

We felt that nothing could go wrong

Each year the balance would be strong

As time passed all seemed quite fine

Money grows along with time

But we discounted fluctuations

Sometimes caused by foreign nations

So when the market takes fright overseas

Investors here brought to their knees

And we now hope that things might change

Renewing hope in our Exchange

Perhaps the lesson we must learn

Is to save less than we earn

And then if our shares get volatile

Nonetheless we can still smile!

Enjoy the Web but Don’t Get Tangled

That science has been for us a boon I think you will agree

From daily grind and drudgery it sets our spirits free

We have to thank the scientists for research knows no bounds

Discovering and inventing things heretofore not found

But science alone might have remained arid ideology

Without its application in practical technology

So down the years these boffins have changed the way we live

A fact for which our grateful thanks we readily should give

The early work of scientists and ingenious engineers

Wrought huge machines with pistons and complicated gears

They lifted things, pushed them along and kept the mines quite dry

Such powerful machines, thus the nation changed thereby

We saw before our eyes a growing Revolution

For every challenge industry would yield a ready-made solution

What e’r our need, or problems quite refractory

The answer surely could be found within our local factory

As years went by the fruits of science touched every modern nation

Technology made to respond what e’r the situation

Chemical, mechanical, electrical, even jet propulsion

Willingly adopted without the least compulsion

Thus o’er the years the pace of change was evident to all

Large cities, congestion, increasing urban sprawl

But science had also generated considerable wealth

These funds provided for our needs and to promote our health

And in due course the sciences of the past did gradually mature

No longer simply a way in which to master crude nature

Research then applied to the field of communication

To draw us near and thus avoid any alienation

For decades the telegraph, the radio and the phone

Could keep each one of us in touch with those at home

And in due time computers and then the Internet

An even slicker system in time it did beget

Although not many this concept did foresee

Thank goodness for the genius of Tim Berners-Lee

His World Wide Web around the globe would span

Perhaps the greatest gift of all to everyman

Thus by means of this masterly innovation

Links could be forged with each and every nation

And in a instant data drawn from every distant land

Is ours by clicking it when linked into broadband

Thus all we needed to ensure that we possess the facts

Of any sphere of knowledge, or any person’s acts

A simple lesson showing how the web to navigate

And thus the store of knowledge we thus can actuate

In this way access to knowledge hoarded by each profession

Became for every man their right, their very own possession

There is no doubt the opening of this mighty treasure

Expanded power through knowledge in ever greater measure

But perhaps a word of caution about this web worldwide

Too many facts, too quickly found, can lose us in its tide

And simply when we come to think of every answer thus on tap

An attitude can easily develop which then becomes a trap

Everything that is worthwhile requires effort on our part

We therefore need thus to apply both mind and even heart

The web is here to stay and in that we rejoice

But how we think and how we act is ever our own choice

Thanks to the pioneers of science for these useful innovations

For their research has brought to us great help, real benefaction

And when life is dull and sometimes lacks that necessary glitter

All pals can readily unite on Face Book and on Twitter!

The Robot

The Robot

(Now republished)

images-1

Is this the future of the human race?
Biscuit tin head with smiley face
Metal frame with cogs and levers
Up-shot of design endeavours

But let’s not jump to quick conclusions
This is not just some mad delusion
The pundits who predict ahead
Claim robot life will be widespread

They say that it makes common sense
With routine tasks we should dispense
And make the robots do our share
Even if that is unfair

But if we let them do too much
And they grasp all in metal clutch
Our own jobs might disappear
And for our living we will fear

The best way for our own survival
Creative thought will bring revival
Humans should do what they do best
And leave the robots to the rest

But are we sure what best we do?
Despite all the knowledge we accrue
We fail to show that human touch
Which yet might change this world so much

Ken Fisher

[The Boston Publishing Group predicts that by 2025
up to a quarter of current jobs won’t be performed
by humans any more. Also on 29 Dec 2016 a major Policy
Analysis group predicted that in the UK we may lose up to 15 million
jobs due to developments in artificial intelligence and robotics]

If Typists Were Poets!!

If Typists Were Poets!!

images

If typists were poets what would be the effect?

Not a single ‘typo’ would you ever detect

The spelling and syntax all perfect would be

And correct punctuation I am sure you would see

But there’s more to a poem than neatly typed letters

If its words are intended to make us feel better

The emotions expressed or the ideas portrayed

Are greater than ciphers however displayed

So let’s never forget when to verse we resort

Lack of good grammar should not ever thwart

Our attempts to convey what comes from our heart

Our stumbling attempts to turn words into art

So if you aspire as a poet or a bard

Of course you will find it is often quite hard

To ensure that your words cause no great confusion

Or your readers bemuse by some obscure illusion

So as you reach for that keyboard have the spell-check to hand

And with your ideas your world will expand

But be careful to type well and present a clear case

And even take care as you choose a typeface
